The best places to surf around the world

04/12/2016

Do you dream of surfing all year round? It is totally possible with two hemispheres to explore. Here is a collection of the most beautiful surfing beaches in the world.

As the seasons change from winter to spring, we start to dream of summer. We crave the warm sun on our backs, the sand between our toes, and the chance to go surfing. The thought of riding the waves, feeling free and being reckless starts to pull at our emotions. If you are new to this creative sport, or an old hand, there’s nothing like playing in the water, perfecting your skills and meeting new like-minded friends.

If that has you excited, then why wait? It might be winter in one part of the world, but look further afield, and there will be somewhere you can go where the conditions are perfect right now! Take a look at our list and whet your appetite for some surfing action.

ALGHERO, SARDINIA

Let’s start in Italy. Not the first place that springs to mind when you’re looking for great surf, but in Sardinia there’s an area where the waves reach four meters high. Head to Porto Ferro Beach in Alghero and hang ten, Italian style.

There is a great YHA Hostel in Alghero that is cheap and fun. This place has a good location; it is close to the centre of town and just 30 minutes away from Porto Ferro.

TARIFA, SPAIN

Over in the neighbouring country of Spain, near the Strait of Gibraltar, is Tarifa, a popular surfing hotspot. This area attracts surfers of all kinds and is a good place for other watersports too. The waves are perfect in spring and autumn and can top three meters in height.

Where to stay in Tarifa

Right on the beach in a prime, sought-after spot is the Hotel Copacabana Tarifa Beach. Surfers love this place, and it is easy to see why. There are breathtaking views of Valdevaqueros Beach and a laid-back atmosphere.

ERICEIRA, PORTUGAL

A little further north, on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, there’s a small fishing village called Ericeira that offers a beach where surfers return year after year. Newbies and pros alike enjoy the waves here.

Where to stay in Ericeira

The Ericeira Chill Hill Hostel & Private Rooms is located in the centre of the village and there are views of the sea from the front. There’s a relaxed vibe at this accommodation, and surf lessons are available for all levels.

BALI, INDONESIA

When it comes to surfing, Bali is one of the most well-known locations to go . Along the western coast of this Indonesian island are several places to surf where the waves are perfect, but we recommend heading to Balangan Beach. The surf here is just right for those who want a challenge, but who don’t want the conditions to be too difficult.

Where to stay in Bali

Close to Balangan Beach is the Maha Residence Guest House Balangan, a tiny boutique place that is intimate and personal. A great guest house to unwind and chill out in.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

Rio is well known for its Carnival, but the beach here is also a magnet for surfers. Macumba Beach attracts a lot of visitors and is always lively, which makes this place exciting.

Where to stay in Macumba

The best hostel here is called Hostel Braz. It has low prices, top service and its own outdoor pool. This accommodation is small, cosy and in an excellent location.

Otherwise, in Copacabana you can play it safe, and book in at El Misti House which is situated in a pedestrian area with every facility close by.

BONDI BEACH & SURFERS PARADISE, AUSTRALIA

We have to mention the two Australians hot spots Bondi Beach and Surfer's Paradise. Bondi is a great place for beginners to learn the ropes, and Surfer’s Paradise is packed with young people having fun and hanging out.

A few steps from the famous Aussie beach is the Lamrock Lodge, a simple, no-thrills place to stay. At Surfer’s we suggest either the Aquarius Backpackers, which belongs to the Base Hostels chain, or the Islander Backpacker Resort – part of the Nomads Hostel brand.

BOCAS DEL TORO, PANAMA

The archipelago of Bocas Del Toro is a lesser-known place to surf where the waves rival those of Tahiti. A province of Panama surrounded by the beautiful Caribbean Sea, the location is like a dream.

Where to stay in Bocas Del Toro

For a wonderful beachside hostel that is laid-back and cool, the Selina Bocas Del Toro is the place to stay.
