On the Island of Nisyros you’ll find Greece like it used to be
Just a ferry away from the party-island of Kos you'll find another side of Greece. The Volcano island Nisyros will remind you what it was like to travel in the Greek archipelago in the past. There are only 950 habitants year-around. The tourists who find their way here are past inhabitants returning to visit, sailors or day tourists from Kos. The port Mandraki is the capital town of Nisyros with 700 habitants. Remains around Mandraki show that the island has been habited since 500 BC and you'll find several monasteries and ruins to visit.
Nisyros used to be more or less self-sufficient, but now only a few farms remain, the island is famous for almonds and olives.
Nisyros offers excellent seafood restaurants with daily catches of calamaris, baby shrimps, and fresh fish. There are several beaches around the island, one of the most popular is the black pebble beach in Mandraki. There are several attractions around the island to visit, like the active volcano, the village town Nikia, and the secluded and protected white beach.
How to go there: To get to Nisyros you first need to fly out to Kos. From Kos airport you take a taxi to the port Kardamena. A ferry leaves 1-2 times a day during the summer and takes about an hour. Then you can finally relax, you have arrived in Nisyros!
