Now is the time to visit Iceland on a budget

Iceland is a mysterious and wild land: largely uninhabited, it has just about 320 000 habitants, and most of them live in the capital Reykjavik.

Once it was an exclusive target of intrepid travelers armed with great courage, and seen by most as a distant and unattainable dream; today Iceland has become a destination for all sorts of travellers -and popular among backpackers and young people due to Icelands unique wilderness and different nightlife in Reykjavik.

Iceland used to be very, very expensive but due to the bank crises in Iceland, it is for the first time suddenly very, very cheap. If you are ever to go to Iceland. Now is the time. Stay at Hostelsclubs 3 star Fosshotel Lind and Fosshotel Baron for as low as 40 Euro/ dubbleroom or 4 star Home Luxury apartments for about 160 Euro/ dubbleroom.

If you are on a tight budget your main concern is only to get a cheap flight. At the moment the low fares airline Iceland Express daily connects some large European cities like London, Barcelona, Berlin and Paris at Keflavik (about forty kilometers from Reykjavik). If you book early your flight will be cheaper.

Once arrived at Keflavik International Airport you can quickly visit this small town of about fourteen thousand inhabitants, famous for its fish industry. If you want to stay over, we recommend the BB Guesthouse, a typical Icelandic Bed and Breakfast, characterized by a warm and relaxing hospitality. This B & B at Keflavik is the ideal solution to make a first step into Iceland, to enjoy the wonders of the city and to visit the wonderful Blue Lagoon (only 15 minutes' drive). Stay for about 50 Euros/ room. Or the elegant 4 star Hotel Keflavik for less than 50 Euro/ room.

From here, the most convenient and practical way is to rent a car which is the only way to see the countryside. There are ofcourse public transportation connecting the main areas by bus, and orginized bustours for tourists. There are no railways in Iceland.

There are plenty of fun things to do in Iceland. Icelandic Horseback riding, taking baths in famous hot springs, Whale watching. Exploring the famous music scene in Reykjavik. Who hasn´t heard of Björk? And there are more where she comes from! All of Reykjavik's nightlife centres on the main street, Laugavegur. Reykjavik, is the most northern capital of the world and with its more than 180 000 inhabitants Reykjavik is a city in constant development, where the ancient and modern are living together in harmony. Its name means 'smoky bay' and comes from the hot springs (geysers) on its territory: a visit to one of the many spas in the capital is what you need to live the Icelandic culture.

From the capital you can continue for the so-called 'Golden Circle', a short tour that allows tourists to get a general idea of Iceland, in particular its overwhelming nature. Moving from about a hundred kilometers from Reykjavik, there is indeed an amazing experience: here in fact you can admire the highest Geyser in the world - the same that gave its name to the phenomenon - with more than eight thousand years and a fountain that shoots up seventy meters high. In the same zone there are other sources, mineral deposits, waterfalls, in addition to the famous rift that divides the North American plate from the Eurasian.

Moving north-east you can visit another area with great natural beauties: Myvatn is a large natural lake located in a volcanic area that between 1975 and 1984 saw nine eruptions. The nearby town of Akureyri is home to a small university and a prestigious high school, but it is especially famous for having a very mild climate compared to the rest of the island, and its proximity to the Arctic Circle, much to be known as 'City of midnight sun.'

As for the food you should taste a typical Icelandic soups and a good fish and chips; Animal products dominate the Islandic cuisine, due to that a vegetarian lifestyle is impossible without importing most from the mainland which is quite costful -the weather and landscape simply does not allow vegetables to grow well. Iceland for example, does not even have trees! That and more suprises awaits you when visisting the magical Iceland...
