Get Captured by the beautiful Stockholm and spend the night in Prison!

07/14/2009

Långholmens vandrarhem is a historical prison turned into a hostel, with the best location in Stockholm, just a few steps from the beach and within walking distance to Stockholm´s best nightlife.

Långholmens Hostel is situated on the small island Långholmen, an island about 1,5 km long, connected with a small wooden bridge to the bigger island Södermalm, perhaps the most popular neighbourhood in Stockholm City at the moment, due to it´s bohemian but trendy habitants, cafés, bars, restuarants, a hot club scene, and lots of designer boutiques.

Långholmen used to be a closed Prison Island uptil the 70´s. First in 18th century, with a prison establishment only for women, then with the new building from 1875 it became known as Sweden´s biggest prison. And it´s part of this historical building that has now been made into the popular hostel Långholmens vandrarhem. The Prison is used as the backdrop of one of Sweden´s most beloved comedies: “Release the Prisoner´s -It´s Spring!”...Check out a wonderful clip from the film here and you´ll see this beautiful island live from the 70´s. One wants to believe that the filmmaker´s got what they wanted, cause the same year the film was released, the prison was closed down.

Now the island is open to the public and has transformed to a little paradise for the habitants of Södermalm. The beaches, both sand and cliffs, are crowded. Walk around the island and you will walk through a small forest, find adorable summer cottages, mansions, a small boat harbor, and see well kept garden lots. In one of the cute houses, Bellmanmuséet from the 16 th century you will find a popular café where they make pastries with fruits and berries picked from their own garden. The Långholmen Hostel also has a popular café in the former exercise-garden for prisoners, now nicely decorated with red roses.

If you stay at Långholmen Hostel you will get the perfect combination of Swedish nature and Stockholm´s best nightlife. Only 10 minute´s walk from the Hostel you will find yourself in the beginning of the street Hornsgatan, and here is where the fun starts! Further down Hornsgatan you will find popular clubs like Marie Laveua, the bar Folkoperan and in the end of Hornsgatan, at Slussen the legendary Rock Club Debaser... After a tour like this though -we recommend you to take a taxi back instead of walking.. Well back at the Hostel -time to jump into the water for a late night swim.

Book Långholmens vandrarhem here - And have fun!
