Fall in love with San Francisco

09/23/2009

Forever rebellious and liberal...Beat, Hippie, Internet -there´s always a revolution going on in San Francisco.

San Francisco nurtured the Beat generation, started a Flower power revolution, captured the hearts of Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra in the tribute song “I left my heart in San Francisco'... And no wonder: San Francisco is known to be one of the most beautiful cities in the USA... and greets 16 million visitors every year!

One of the most interesting tourist sites in San Francisco is Chinatown, which is the best and biggest Chinatown outside China! And did you know the Fortune Cookie was invented here? One of many intersting attractions in Chinatown is the Fortune Cookie Factory, besides excellent Chinese restaurants, unique herbal shops, authentic Buddhist temples, and alleys full of secret clubs and societies...

The History of Chinatown started with 3 immigrants arriving in 1848 during the gold rush years, and has now over 30,000 inhabitants.

San Francisco has a Medittereanen climate but the weather in San Francisco is a topic in itself. Mark Twain famously commented that the coldest winter he ever spent was the summer in San Francisco. And it´s true. The summer doesn´t start until late August til October, and June and July can be the coldest months of the year due to a chilly breeze from the bay. The weather is unpredictable even on a daily bases, with sunny mornings and raniy cold afternoons, but it is still worth the visit.

San Francisco has a reputation of being the most liberal city in the USA. During World War 2, the port was a place for lost soldiers and immigrants making the city more “shaken up” and openminded. Shortly afterwards this exposure to different cultures also welcomed writers and artists to move to San Fran. Then the Beat movement in the 50´s, started a european coffeehouse culture in San Farncisco. In the 60´s San Fran had a large Hippie movement and in 1970 the city had its first Gay parade and invented the famous Rainbow symbol.

Nowadays San Francisco is also known for the Internet revolution, and Silicon Valley, which have led to an unusual high living standard for its citizens.
