They are made of Portuguese people number one's obsession: codfish! There are more receipts with codfish in Portugal then days in a year. True story. These little fish croquettes are crispy in the outside but soft inside and can be eaten as a starter or as main dish with rice and salad.

2. Francesinha

You must head north for this one, to Porto (well, that's what the locals say but I'm sure you can find a good Francesinha anywhere in country these days!). Nevertheless, the sauce can be different but the main part is the same: a sandwich with ham and sausages, covered with cheese and with an egg on the top. Usually comes with chips to eat with the sauce. Hope you're hungry cause this ain't a small sandwich!

3. Soupa da Pedra (Stone Soup)

Visit the capital of Stone Soup for this one: Almeirim! It is made of sausages, potatoes, meat and beans.

4. Sardinhas assadas (Grilled Sardines)

Best time to eat sardines is in June, during the traditional outside parties that happen all over the country. Eat them with bread, peppers and olive oil and, with your beer in one hand and your sardines in the other and go enjoy the summer festivities!

5. Arroz doce (Rice Pudding)
