We've found the best jobs to do while travelling, so your adventures never have to end! Here's our list of jobs that travel the world!
Working in the office is not for everyone.
Long working hours, set holiday periods and irritating colleagues are just some of the reasons why many people have turned to remote jobs. Luckily the age of the internet has allowed more and more jobs to be done remotely - so you can say goodbye to the desk and hello to a life on the road… or your sofa.
We all dream of living a nomad life, but what jobs that travel the world can you actually do? Most involve freelance work, so the pressure to find jobs is on you, but the rewards can be endless.
Just think - no more bossy bosses, office politics or the daily commute. What, we ask, could be better than that?
The office for today ...
Freelance Writer
Probably the most wide-ranging freelance job allowing you to work anywhere in the world is writing. Plenty of websites are always looking for content creators to produce blogs, articles, recipes, and how-to pages. Often, you will be paid a set amount per piece, but some sites offer package deals, which is great in the long run as you can guarantee work, even if the price per piece is a bit lower. The best way to get into this business is…. write! It sounds obvious, but the more content you have to show potential business partners the better - you could consider writing a blog or column to show off your writing skills. Remember, freelance websites can help you find work, but with all the competition you are unlikely to find constant commissions. Contacts, word of mouth, reputation and your own marketing can really pay off and land you more permanent work.
Translator
If you speak two or more languages on a fluent or quasi-fluent level then you’re lucky to have a gift which can make you some serious cash, especially if you speak lesser-known languages. Translating jobs can be both gig or permanent based - the worldwide economy means the constant translation is a must on the web, but also in the literary world. Most translators specialise in a specific area - legal, historical, or artistic for example - so if you can pair your language skills with your area of study then you’re good to go. Rates can vary, but most translators work on a per word or character basis, and you can charge more for jobs that need to be done quickly.
Odd Jobs
Probably the most popular way that travellers earn money is through doing off jobs as they go along - anything from fruit-picking and bar work to nannying, cleaning, painting and repairing jobs. The huge plus for these jobs is that you don't need to necessarily have a particular skill, but the downside is that you can't guarantee you can always find this kind of work. We suggest checking the notice boards of hostels that you are staying at, as you can often find local job offers listed there.
Work in a hostel
Speaking of hostels, another possible option to try out is working in one: occasionally some hostels will allow guests to stay in the property in exchange for work, such as changing beds, helping in the reception, or running the daily bar crawls. Although you cannot guarantee that Hostels will take you up on the offer, so we recommend you book a few nights stay first! If you are interested in a similar solution we can recommend you some really useful sites: hosteltraveljobs.com, hosteljobs.net and worldpackers.com have a large database with lots of job offers all over the world ... create an account in a few clicks and start looking for the destination you're interested in!
Teacher/Tutor
The world of teaching, just like many other professions, has partially moved online. Working as a remote teacher or tutor is pretty rewarding, and can leave you with loads of free time while still making enough cash to live. From marking online exams to holding lessons via Skype, there are endless ways that you can teach through the web. Of course, face-to-face teaching is always an option, although this does mean staying fixed in one place for a little while. If you're a native English speaker (or at least very good at the language) then you're in luck - the need for English teachers is on the rise and will continue to rise as the global market expands. We recommend that you get some kind of certification before starting to teach, so check out the TEFL website to know more.
Social Media Manager
A job that is not for everyone, but perfect for some. A presence on online social media is a fundamental aspect for many companies nowadays - from marketing and advertising to customer care and publicity - social media is one of the most powerful tools that companies use to interact with potential customers and clients. Of course, running pages and profiles is a difficult task and not one that any company can do on its own without specialist help. A social media manager looks after and produces content for businesses pages: creating posts, campaigns and more. The best aspect of this job is that you can work for multiple companies at once and you can really measure your results to prove how good you are.
Get involved in a Work-Away program
Luckily, you don't always have to make it on your own. There are many websites that now organise work for travellers across the world, where in exchange for a few hours work a day you are provided with accommodation and cash. We recommend Work-Away as a great place to start. You can choose if you want to work in educational environments, offices, with families, on farms, or with animals. Don't expect to get rich from these jobs, but expect enough to keep you afloat and travelling onwards and upwards.
Vlogger/Blogger
An over-saturated market for sure, but if you've got something unique to say, tell the world! A good blog or vlog can lead to paid advertising and sponsorships once you've built up a unique and interactive audience (HostelsClub just worked with the famous magician and vlogger Julius Dein by the way). Travel bloggers are abundant, but there is always space for someone new, and it may even help you travel the world! Just remember, you've really got to find your USP (Unique Selling Point) in order to captivate your audience and be able to promote yourself to potential advertisers.
So what are you waiting for? Find your talent and turn it into a money maker that will let you travel the world!
