In Mossel Bay, South Africa, you can sleep and eat while looking at the waves break in a train-hostel
In the mid 80es Peter Tosh released Mama Africa and with his reggae version of Chack Berry's “Johnny Be Good” made his album become his greatest success. For those who don't know this song, it's the one Marty McFly plays in “Back to the Future”.
Here at HostelsClub.com, we have different music tastes: some of our staff are semi hipsters who listen to indie and electro jazz, there are Johnny Cash's and Lady Gaga's fans and there's also someone who likes reggae. And because we love everyone in our team, from time to time we also listen to reggae. In “Mama Africa” there's a song called “Stop the train (I am leaving)” and while one of our work mates starts singing its tunes, another one reminds the rest that among our top sellers we have a train-hostel which is exactly in Africa.
From the way we're telling this, it may sound like a fairy tale but it's actually a true story (and Lady Gaga's fans are reality too).
This hostel does exist, it it called The Santos Express Train Lodge, “The Train” by locals. It is a real train which parked 30 meters from wonderful Santos beach in Mossel Bay. Its cars haven't been on a rail for years and have become hotel/hostel rooms.
There are rooms of all kinds here: singles, doubles, twins and - for those who want to spend really little but still enjoy an amazing ocean view - there's a dorm as well.
For obvious reasons bathrooms are shared, but if backapckers blood is running in your veins this won't be a problem.
Near the cars there's also a restaurant, which is run by “Santos Express” buddies, where you can taste typical South African dishes. Seafood is very popular but also meat lovers will be delighted to try delicious barbeques. Don't forget it's called braai here as well as in Zimbabwe and Botswana, forewarned is forearmed!
Its atmosphere is super relaxed thanks to Mossel Bay's warm weather, soft light coming from the beach, yummy food and friendly staff. And when you're tired of the sweet sound of waves breaking, tepid sun and light breeze caressing your skin, surfers' hot bodies passing by, local pub's cold beer refreshing you, you can still reach Mossel Bay city center and visit local museums and shops.
Book "Santos Express Train Lodge", let the sound of the Indian Ocean lull you and while you're half-asleep try to whistle "Stop that train" and think of us...
