Avoid Bad Weather All Year Round When Travelling

08/01/2018

This article directs you away from the rain and towards the sun, whichever month you plan to book a trip abroad.

Constantly refreshing the weather app the day before your holiday, only to be presented with the same row of grey clouds every time you do so? Yes, it’s happened to most of us at some point, and we get it, it’s very frustrating.

This is why we have come up with a complete guide to the places you should steer clear of by season, and where you can find a sunny alternative that guarantees clear skies for your travels!

Spring

Avoid: Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Illinois

Why? Spring thunderstorms may produce strong tornadoes in the U.S., particularly in the states mentioned above. The region in which they are located has actually been nicknamed "Tornado Alley", so it is best to give this area a miss during the months of Spring unless you want to lose your hat... or your house!

Sunny alternatives:

Maldives - Although the Maldives are, for the most part, sunny and warm all year round, the best time to visit is undoubtedly between Novemer and April, as average temperatures of 23-31°C offer optimal tanning conditions. Alvi Star Inn in the Maldives is a great place to stay, especially if you are one who enjoys snorkeling, fishing, windsurfing and diving.

Maldives

Dubai, UAE - Similarly, Dubai is a prime location for sun-seekers between the months of November and April, as low humidity paired with average temperatures of 33°C makes Spring the perfect time to chill out on the beach. What's more, the sea temperature can reach up to 25°C, so rest assured you won't complain about taking a dip over here. Stay at Backpacker 16 hostel in Dubai for quality budget accommodation, and make the most of the rooftop pool!

Dubai

Sicily, Italy - For a Sicilian Spring, and slightly cooler than the latter two, why not stay in this rustic B&B Agriturismo Ghiritina for a truly authentic Italian experience! As April arrives, temperatures reach up to 18°C, fantastic for wandering around old towns and enjoying the local cuisine. Visiting Sicily in April gives you a head-start before the peak tourist season of the summer months kicks off, enjoying scenes under the sun all to yourself.

Sicily, Italy

Summer

Avoid: Meghalaya, Mumbai and Delhi

Why? As is well-known, India's Monsoon period lasts from July through to September. We suggest avoiding the places mentioned above within the summer months, or if you feel like braving the rain, don't forget to pack a brolly! Steer particularly clear of Meghalaya state, as it is actually the wettest place in the world, unless a rainy trip away sounds like your style... (I mean, it could be quite fun...could be...)

Sunny alternatives:

Crete, Greece - Crete has an average temperature of around 26°C in the summer, with highs reaching 29°C and above (especially in the South) and lows never below a lovely 22°C. Clear skies, and even clearer waters, it's the perfect location for a sunny vacay. We suggest staying at Youth Hostel Regina for a low-cost option only 300m from the beach!

Crete, Greece

Paphos, Cyprus - Cyprus is a great place to be during the summer season, as dream temperatures reaching average highs of 30°C, combined with white, sandy beaches and azure waters makes it the ultimate holiday destination. Stay at Trip Yard Hostel Paphos, situated at the heart of the city and only 7 minutes from the beach by foot, as it has everything you need to enjoy your time under those rays to the max.

Paphos, Cyprus

Dubrovnik, Croatia - This seaside Renaissance city offers both historical architecture and scenic coastal views for splendour under the sunshine. To experience the best of both worlds, stay in Apartment Lele - just minutes from the beach and only a ten minute bus ride from the old town. With highs reaching nearly 30°C, 13 hours of daily sunshine and 25°C sea temperatures, who wouldn't want to be in Dubrovnik this summer?! We certainly do!

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Autumn

Avoid: The Atlantic Coast, the Gulf of Mexico and the Hawaiian islands

Why? The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from late summer right through to November, with most hurricanes occurring in September. The areas stated above are most vulnerable to hurricanes within this period, so if you are looking to book a trip in the fall, it's best to look elsewhere from Cape Verde or the Caribbean.

Sunny alternatives:

Nice, France - The South of France in Autumn is a prime time to visit, as temperatures are still around 18°C with highs of 21°C. The crowds have departed and kids have gone back to school, so you can enjoy luxury-style living for less in Cannes, Nice and even Saint-Tropez. We recommend Hostel Smith located in the centre of Nice, as it is close to the beach, bars, cafes and shops... everything you need for a last-minute holiday in the sun.

Nice, France

Sardinia, Italy - The Autumn months, particularly September and October, are the best time to go to Sardinia, as it is still hot but not too hot... temperatures still reaching the high 20s, and 23°C waters. The beaches are less crowded, and not scorching hot like the summer months, so it's the best beach spot for you to take in some rays this fall. Stay in Victoria Bed and Breakfast if you want to explore the Southern city of Cagliari, located only minutes away from some of the finest beaches on the island.

Sardinia, Italy

Seville, Spain - Averages tend to maintain 20°C in October, making Autumn the best time to visit Seville if you prefer warm, comfortable climates rather than hot hot hot! Equally, as Seville is a city trip, it is perhaps better to visit when temperatures are slightly cooler in order to experience the incredible architecture of the Andalusian city without having to melt in the heat! Where to stay is a no-brainer, as the renowned Oasis Backpackers' Hostel Sevilla offers all you need... from bar crawls to rooftop pools, right in the heart of the city, it's the go-to for some fun in the sun!

Seville, Spain

Winter

Avoid: Russia and Canada

Why? Escape the cold! Russia is one of the coldest countries in the world in winter, with frosts as low as -30°C (common in Moscow and even colder further North)... if it's sun you are looking for, stay well away from the remote village of Oymyakon, as it is actually the coldest inhabited place on earth, Brrrrr! It's the same story for many areas in Canada, particularly the Western Cities such as Winnipeg, where it's not uncommon for temperatures to drop to as low as -40°C.

Sunny alternatives:

Marrakech, Morocco - Morocco's year-round warm climate means that even in December there are highs of 20°C. Stay in the relaxing, old moroccan Riad Itry for a friendly, local experience. Hang out on the terrace with other travellers in top temps, or walk a few minutes down the road to explore Marrakech's main square Jemaa el-Fnaa and the famous souks of Marrakech.

Marrakech, Morocco

Queensland, Australia - As the Aussie summer actually takes place from December through to February, it's prime time to hit the beach! With highs averaging 28°C - 32°C, they don't call it a Surfers Paradise for nothing! Book your stay at Aquarius Gold Coast for the ultimate Gold Coast experience, as world-famous beaches, trendy clubs, bars, shops and more are right on your doorstep. Surfer-dudes grab those boards and head down-under this winter!

Surfer's Paradise, Australia

Miami, Florida - Averaging daily maximum temperatures of between 24°C - 27°C in December, Miami is a good place to go for a winter-sun escape. We recommend Rock Hostel Miami as it is in prime position for those looking to soak up the sun on South Beach. Located only one block away from Ocean Drive, switch up your chilly winter mornings for waves, palms and parties, live it up Miami style!

Miami, Florida

There you have it! You are now a PRO when it comes to weather conditions all over the world, so next time your friend suggests a trip to Barbados in Autumn you'll be one step ahead... Thank us later when you're on a beach with a cocktail in hand, and be sure to share your pictures with us!
