Rhodes is the biggest island of the Dodecanese and it is renowned for its mild climate and sunny weather (with 300 sunny days a year). Thanks to the charming nature, the green hills and the enchanting bays, it has been nicknamed "Island of the Rose" or "Island of the Butterflies". There is also a 3rd interesting nickname: Rhodes is the island of wine: this is where Greeks started planting vineyards and still today the local wine is really delicious.

This is the place of birth of Hippocrates (the father of medical science), and the major attraction of the island is the ancient tree where the Greek master used to teach his pupils. To not miss are the Temple of Asclepius, the Roman Odeon, and the majestic Castle of the Knights. There are not only history, culture and archeology in this fantastic island kissed by the sun and blown by a special wind called "meltemi": Lambi Beach, Tingaki Beach and the thermal pools of Loutrà are worth the trip. If you have some spare time, visit the fisherman village of Kardamena (even though it has turned into a far too touristic destination)

The first 2 ones are touristic destinations, loved by Greeks for its charming sandy beaches, crystal clear water, surrounded by a lush vegetation. Mount Athos in considered by the Greeks as a holy mountain: it is a unique city, where nature is the queen and the mountain trails lead to several monasteries where time seems to have stopped and monks are still following an ancient life style. The access is limited only to 10 non-orthodox pilgrims a day. Female pilgrims are not allowed in the monasteries.
