Don't have a lot of money but want to travel to Germany? From edgy art galleries in Berlin to fairytale castles in Bavaria, there’s a fantastic range of things to see and do in Deutschland.
If you're a student backpacker or on an entry-level salary, you won’t want to blow your entire budget in the first week. Check out below what places to see in Germany if you’re running short on cash.
Party hard in arty Berlin

Berlin is well known as a home for starving artists and musicians. If you want to go completely wild on a budget, look no further than the grungy German capital.
With its carefree attitude toward partying — not to mention cheap hostels, bars and attractions that match the backpacker's budget, it’s the best place to hang out if you have no money.
Go on a FREE walking tour in Munich

Munich has an expensive reputation compared to Berlin so why not see the city’s landmarks as part of a free walking tour?
Discover the stories behind the Glockenspiel, the Hofbräuhaus (world famous beer hall) and the Frauenkirche. Lasting up to three hours, you’ll learn the true story behind the Oktoberfest and receive excellent tips on where to drink the best beer in town.
See Neuschwanstein Castle on the cheap

One of the must-see sights in Germany is the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein. Built by ‘Mad’ King Ludwig in the late 19th century, this fairytale castle inspired Walt Disney to create the Magic Kingdom.
If you want to see it cheaply from Munich, you need to book a Bavaria Ticket from Hauptbahnhof train station. The cost for two people is €31 or €25 for a single traveller. If you want to stay overnight most travellers book a hostel in Füssen.
Sleep under the stars in the Black Forest

The Black Forest (Schwarzwald) is a magnificent place to explore. With its fresh mountain pines and clear streams, it’s one of Europe’s most beautiful natural landscapes.
If you travel along the Black Forest rail route, between Offenburg and Konstanz, the scenic rewards on that journey will rival anything you could ever pay to see.
Go on a free harbour trip in Hamburg

When staying in Hamburg you can buy an all-round HVV day ticket for €6 and not only can you spend all day on the city’s buses and S-Bahn, but you can even travel by ferry too! On the boat trip, you’ll see gritty industrial docks, refurbished warehouses, the fishmarket (see above) and the historical harbour “övelgönne”.
Visit Bremen for a budget weekend

Check out the picturesque Schnoor district and modernist art masterpieces at the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum. Walking around the ‘alt-stadt’ is an another free and excellent way to experience the city’s baroque architecture.
Germany’s second-largest port after Hamburg is beautiful to explore on foot, and you can save a small fortune in Bremen by just taking in the sights.
