The worlds only Aircraft turned into a 5 star Hostel!
There´s a blizzard snow storm the day I land at Arlanda airport. I take the free Airport shuttle for a 5 minute ride to see what everybody in the hostel business is talking about right now: The Jumbo Hostel. Since it opened 3 months ago it has had amazing publicity, mentioned in newspapers like NY Times as well as BBC. Already in the airport shuttle I overhear a conversation about it among my fellow passengers: So how about the Jumbo Hostel, are they done yet, have they opened?
They certainly have.
When I drag my suitcase up to this huge Jumbo Jet Aircraft parked on a piece of land by the highway I wonder how I will ever get up there? But soon I see the convenient elevator. No worries, this Hostel is Hostel De Lux, with a flat screen TV in every room and new carpet in the Reception. In Sweden it´s a custom to take off your shoes indoors, and also here. So don´t be surprised if you have to also check in your boots. Everything in here is super fresh, white and cozy.
Jumbo Hostel has 25 rooms and 85 beds. Included in all room prices is their tasty breakfast. There are dorm beds, single, double and triple-bed rooms. Or chose to sleep in the Cockpit suite! This is an opportunity likely to never experience again.
I met with the entrepreneur Oscar Diös who is the man behind this Sleeping Jumbo Jet. He told me Jumbo Hostel could well be franchised in the near future to other airports around the globe. Airports usually don´t provide hostel accommodation so it´s a promising market and the attention around Jumbo Hostel has been extensive.
The Jumbo Hostel is made from a Boeing 747-200 and was built in 1976 for Singapore Airlines and later flew under Pan Am.
