Festivals and bicycle touring
In the beatiful Turku archipelago you can enjoy the unique finnish seaside. The best starting point for the adventures is the historical city of Turku.
Turku is the old capital city of Finland. In this charming city you can visit the over 700 years old Turku Castle and the Turku Cathedral and enjoy the boulevards of the Aura river. Nice places to stay at are the centrally located Hotel Harriet and the family hotel Artukaisten Paviljonki. During the summer there are several festivals in the city and its neighbourhoods. The biggest festival is the Ruisrock in Ruissalo 3.-5.7. In 2009 at Ruisrock you can go to the concerts of Gogol Bordello, Calexico and Ladytron just to name but a few. Other festivals are the Medieval Market 25.-28.6., Down By The Laituri DBTL 28.7.-2.8. and Tall ships' Races 23.-26.7. All year around you can visit the cosy bars like the Brewery Restaurant Koulu (a school refurbished into a bar), Pub Restaurant Puutorin Vessa (a former public toilet) or the dynamic rock venue Dynamo.
Once you have spent enogh time in the city you can start a round trip in the Turku Archipelago. Rent a car or a bicycle. There are many possible routes to choose from. If you are travelling by bike for the first time then a not-so-demanding round trip would be a bicycle route that goes through Turku, Kaarina, Parainen, Nauvo, Rymättylä, Naantali and then back to Turku. That is about 80 kilometres (49,6 miles). The archipelago is a place where you can enjoy of a beautiful and unique nature and do many kinds of activities like kayaking, fishing and riding.
When you get to the city of Naantali you can go to visit the famous Moomin trolls. The Moomins are a cheerful, carefree and adventurous family that the finnish-swedish comic strip author and novelist Tove Jansson created. In the Moominworld in Naantali you can meet the Moomin characters, visit their tower-like, blue painted house and be part of the Moominworld happenings.
