Krakow: The City with a Soul

Markets, Castles, Caves and Tours

Poland has many cities where you can find the charming nooks but Krakow is undoubtedly the capital known as the 'city with a soul' for a reason. While it fully deserves this name you can find out why by taking a closer look and visiting Krakow.

When you first think of Poland, usually these words or ideas come to mind:

Lajkonik, Barbican, bagels, hackney carriages, charming cafes, churches, Romanesque, Gothic, Pierogi, Krakow mounds, John Paul II, legends...

However, when looking for a romantic place to make a lasting memory, Krakow might not come to mind at first yet if you take a walk down the charming streets, whose system is still preserved from the Middle Ages, you'll feel the history seeping in. The stones of Krakow's pavement still remember the weight of the feet of walking knights and the length of the dresses of theirs ladies. The atmosphere of secrecy and bonding with the past is caused by the original tenements, whose lineage goes all the way back to the fifteenth century. What's not romantic about this?

When deciding which attractions to see, Krakow's historic market is a must. For original souvenirs, Cloth Hall is the best place though. Then you can feast your eyes with the royal atmosphere of the Wawel Castle where you can not only see the official rooms and an armory, but also private rooms of the monarchs.

If you want to know about the legendary past of Krakow, go and see the Dragon's Cave. Reportedly the Wawel's Dragon lived in this cave, but at a later time the inn was housed there, and perhaps even a brothel. The large 200-foot-long cave in Wawel Hill, Krakow, which has been known for centuries as the monster’s den, now attracts thousands of visitors each year. Whatever the truth of the dragon legend, the Dragon’s Cave (Polish ‘Smocza Jama’) is Cracow’s oldest residence, inhabited by man from the Stone Age through the 16th century.

Fortunately, you don't have to sleep in a cave when visiting because there are plenty of hostels in Krakow which can meet your budget and needs. However, to get a better taste of the city and to learn more about the history and the present link in an unforgettable whole, HostelsClub features Escape2Poland tour operator that specializes in Poland city breaks. They have the Auschwitz Tour which will show you the infamous camp from the Holocaust era, the Wielisczka Salt Mine Tour where you can see one of the oldest salt mines in Europe and regular airport transfers available.

With all these activities listed your trip is almost planned, so all you have to do now is book your hostel in Krakow!
