If you are just passing through or staying for only three or four days, make sure you make a round strolling Stradun/Placa, the main street in the Old town. Doing this will put you right in the heart of the magical Old Town built of stone, surrounded by the 1940 meters long stone walls. The world's second most visited outdoor museum offers incredible vistas which simply beckon to be photographed, the photos sure to be your most prized ones and displayed on the first pages of your albums.
No matter what your schedule is like we recommend you also try and visit at least one of the museums and venture back in time... Learn, for instance, how Rector ruled the Republic of Dubrovnik, where and how grain was stored, and what types of vessels made up the Republic's merchant fleet, the very same that made the Republic famous throughout the world.
The Rector's Palace, the political and administrative center of the Republic of Ragusa, just might reveal to you the secret of the success of Dubrovnik's diplomacy which preserved the Republic's freedom, its greatest treasure, for centuries.
In the Rupe ethnographic museum you can learn how grain was stored in the vast chambers which were dug into the rock.
Dubrovnik's Maritime museum is also worth a visit as it tells the story of ships and sailing, and the complex calculations mathematician Getaldic and philospher and physicist Boškovic came up with in naval architecture.
Do not miss the opportunity to visit Europe's second oldest synagogue and its fascinating, though rather small museum displaying a number of interesting artefacts that tell a story of life of the Jewish community in Dubrovnik.
The Cathedral Treasury has a collection of sacred objects in silver and gold made by the old Dubrovnik master craftsmen from the 11th to the 19th century.
Dominican monastery houses an impressive collection of works from the "Dubrovnik School" of the 15th and 16th century, and an altarpiece by Titian.
The Franciscan monastery and its adjointing 14th century pharmacy display an impressive inventory. Rising above Dubrovnik is the mount Srd on top of which is the fort Imperial, the symbol of defence of Dubrovnik in the recent Homeland War. Within the fort there are three rooms displaying artefacts and commemorating three different periods of the homeland war: (1) the very beginning of the resistance against the Serbian and Montenegrian aggression of 1991; (2) defending the territory around Dubrovnik and pushing the Yugoslav aggressor behind the borders of the Republic of Croatia; (3) destruction and suffering endured by this beautiful city and its inhabitants. At the moment, you may see tens of actual weapons and explosive devices used in the attack on the Imperial fort in 1991.
Aside from the already mentioned, you may choose to enjoy the performances during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, or, time permitting, visit local townships in the vicinity.
Visit Lokrum, the island of the enamoured ones, is the closest island to the Old Town. Centuries old lore, numerous legends and stories, the magic of the sea and the island's nature will undoubtedly renew old love or spark a new one.
Visit Trsteno, an old settlement known especially for the Arboretum of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts, and a place where one of the most beautiful women of the Renaissance, the poet Cvijeta Zuzoric, lived and loved and wrote her verses. Like her, you also can walk under the ancient exotic trees and view your reflection in the fountain of Neptune and the Nymphs.

Enjoy some of the local delicassies in the Old Town's cozy family restaurants and, why not, end this dining experience with a coffee right on Stradun. Dubrovnik is a city with a mild Mediterranean climate enjoying 2600 hours of sunshine yearly and, surely to the envy of many, you now got to be one of those lucky ones living the opportunity to visit Dubrovnik for seven or more days.
After you have explored local historical sights, museums, galleries, and have soaked up the wisdom from Dubrovnik's "elders", you may want to try some of the local gastronomical delicasses. It would also be wise to dedicate some of your time to simply relaxing, exploring, resting, swimming and snorkeling, strolling about, reading, listening to music, forgetting any stressful situations... just being... Dubrovnik and the region abound with recreational and sports facilities. You might find it soothing to nourish your body and your soul in one of the wellness and beauty centers.
Just an hour's drive from Dubrovnik is Ston. Take a walk on this small town's defensive walls, salt factory, taste oysters and mussles farmed in the bay of Mali Ston, visit vineyards along the road on the Pelješac penninsula.
If you do find yourself on Pelješac, you may consider taking an easy ferry ride from Orebic accross to the medieval town of Korcula on the island by the same name. Surrounded by the 13th century walls reinforced with towers and bastions, this enchanting town of gothic and renaissance buildings is the birthplace of the well-known explorer Marko Polo. It is also the spot where you can see the commemorative folk festivals, most notably the Moreška, the Moštra, and the Kumpanija sword dances.
Southeast of Dubrovnik is Konavle. More than twenty villages with the presiding township of Cavtat form one of the most beautiful parts of Dubrovnik's Riviera. Konavle is well known for its traditional costumes, fine wines, home-made prosciutto and cheese in oil that will not leave wanting even the most demanding of connnaissuers. Another reason to visit Konavle is its age old story of silk. If you like hiking, the Konavle hills are a rewarding choice. Of course, you can always opt for a Jeep safari or a horse-back riding.
If you are into archeology, the delta of the river Neretva, the largest river in the region, would be the best choice. Consider visiting the remnants of the antique locality of Narona. In the past visited mostly by domestic and foreign collectors, ever since it was recognized by the archeological authorities it has increasingly been visited by the experts. Photosafari in the Neretva delta is also unforgettable.
Also visit ornitological exhibit in Metkovic, especially interesting because all the species of bird (over 230) have been caught in the delta. Although there are several reservations in the area, some extinct species can only be seen in the mentioned exhibit.
The Neretva delta is also famous for its superb tangarines. Part of the fun may be joining local farmers in picking them.
Be sure to visit the National Park on the island of Mljet, especially the two salt-water lakes surrounding by pine forests. Mljet somehow always seems mysterious, perhaps because of its lore and legends that speak of Ulysses, St. Paul, Benedictine monks, and sea lions. If you want to cycle on the island, there is a place where you can rent a bike. If you prefer walking there are gentle and aromatic paths. You would also make a fine choice by deciding to visit St. Mary's Island in the middle of the Big Lake, and see the ancient benedictine monastery and the church (12th century).
Authentic Handicrafts at the Old Town Entrance Embroidery specific to Konavle is much sought after by both tourists and collectors. As you approach the Old Town gate you just might run into Ms. Ane, a craftmaster and seller of embroidery. You will easily recognize her for the traditional folk dress she usually wears. Many of the passers by stop and snap a few photos of the bookmarkers, tableclothes, costers, etc., or learn the crafting secrets.
The "Authentic Dubrovnik House" Despite the numerous dime-a-dozen souvenir shops, there are still some unique oases with authentic souvenirs. Even before you actually enter the "Authentic Dubrovnik House" the dry-fig-and-laurel wreaths about the entrance give indication of its uniqueness.
