Ericeira is one of the top surfing towns in Portugal and has a cosmopolitan atmosphere in July and August. Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, the Portuguese town is famous for its sea views and surfing waves, but what makes Ericeira really special is its summer beach parties.

Where is it?

Ericeira is a traditional fishing town and surfer paradise about 35 kilometres (22 miles) northwest of Portugal’s capital, Lisbon.

How do you get to Ericeira?

A cheap way to get to Ericeira is taking the express coach service from Lisbon. Departing from Lisbon’s Campo Grande metro station there is a direct route to the town centre. The first bus departs at 06:27 am until 11:40 pm. It takes about 45 minutes on the fast bus. Check out the bus timetable at www.mafrense.pt.

What are the best party beaches in Ericeira?

Praia do Sul

Praia do Sul is Ericeira’s most popular beach and here you’ll find European clubbers dancing all night to house music. This is the top beach destination in Ericeira and is only a few minutes from the town centre. Near the beach you’ll find a small promenade with excellent seafood restaurants and funky bars.

Ribeira d'Ilhas

Set inside a sandy valley between high cliffs, about 3km north of the town is Ribeira d'Ilhas. The beach is a regular stop on the ASP world surfing tour and is frequented by Portugal's most famous surfer, Tiago Pires, who hails from Ericeira. Come evening, the beach turns into a dance club and spills across the shore where the dancing goes on until sunrise.

Where to eat and drink in Ericeira?

Praca da Republica, the town square, is full of traditional cafes and cake shops, while the Rua Dr Eduardo Burnay, which leads from the main square to Praia do Sul beach, is full of vibrant bars and restaurants.

Ericeira has some top cheap eateries for travellers and surfers. Local dishes include fresh grilled sardines and lobsters, which are raised in sea farms in Ericeira.
