A song of Travel & TV to visit the sets of Game of Thrones.

Winter is passing: get ready to discover the Game of Thrones sets!

If, just like us, you can’t wait for the next Game of Thrones season, you might enjoy this short guide to refresh your memory on the events and places where the hit TV series was filmed.

The locations of Game of Thrones are scattered all around Europe - the series is filmed by 3 different crews (aptly named Dragon, Wolf and Raven) in different places at the same time. If you want to track down your heroes, party hard with Tyrion, propose to Daenerys or behead a Night Watch deserter, this is your guide!

Northern Ireland is known as a green country, with a quiet countryside full of calm rivers and hills, with fog and sheep (and, occasionally, beer). However, it was the location for one of the unluckiest kingdoms of Westeros: the scenes set in the North were shot here, mainly in the county of Down, where Winterfell was recreated at Castle Ward. You can find Down a little south of Belfast: many outdoor scenes in the series were shot here, since the main indoor studio is located in Belfast itself.

If you think that manning the wall is a duty as well as an honour, and that deserters deserve a severe punishment, head north from Belfast to Antrim Plateau, where Ned Stark forever separated a deserter’s body and his head (ah, karma…), amidst breath-taking green hills and steep cliffs. Since, as of late, Winterfell isn'treally safe, we suggest you sleep in Northern Ireland, and explore from there!

If you are under the fascination of power, incest and treason (and frankly, who isn’t?), you might want to check out King’s Landing. It’s a bit hard to tell where King Jeoffrey, and king Robert before him, have set their residence: scenes set in King's Landing have been shot in different cities. The aerial shots of the capital of Westeros, and some street scenes as well, have been filmed in the scenic Dubrovnik, one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe (even after Stannis’ attack). It's hard to find the old inns and taverns, or also Littlefinger's "club", but you can sleep like a king in Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik as King's Landing

The interior of the Red Keep, on the other hand, is set in Malta, in the palaces of beautiful Valletta. If you feel like having a big night out with good old Tyrion, however, look for him in the nearby pubs and clubs of St. Julians! Looking for a rest after a hard night with the former diminutive Hand of the King? Catch come sleep in Malta and Gozo!

And, once you’re in Malta, wouldn’t you like to marry a Targaryen princess? You get a shot at becoming king, three lovely fire-breathing pets and a cool surname. If this entices you, don’t go too far: the wedding of Daenerys and Drogo was shot near the Blue Window, in the island of Gozo: its steep cliffs and crystal-blue sea are the perfect background for a majestic wedding, or for a relaxing summer holiday (dragon eggs not included). Who would have known that Daenerys had been so close to King's Landing? The Lannisters better start to watch their backs!

Apparently, the fair-haired princess has made a habit of being closer to Westeros than you would imagine: when production moved back to Dubrovnik for the third season, the island of Lokrum, in front of the city, became a favourite location. Scenes set both in the garden of the Red Keep and in Qarth were shot here, only a few meters apart! Head here if you want to plan a royal wedding with the women of the Tyrell family, or to help Daenerys look for her lost dragons, but beware of the Warlocks!

Have you ever dreamt of having an army of slaves at your command and conquering the kingdom that your family lost? If so, head to Astapor, where the Unsullied are trained and sold. If you can’t find Astapor on a modern map, we suggest that you book a flight to Marrakech, where the Astapor scenes were shot. Make sure that a Mormont follows you to keep you safe – lord Barristan may not always be around! If you want to check out more Unsullied, or just feel like exploring the Suk, hide from the Warlocks in a Marrakech Hostel for the night!

What about the puppy-eyed Jon Snow and his red haired friend/foe? You’ll find them on the opposite sides of the Wall up north in Iceland, if you’re brave enough to fight the White Walkers. Pack your dragon glass blade and get ready! If Castle Black is too cold for you, feel free to find a comfortable place in Iceland, and hope that the White Walkers don't attack that night!
