The little things that make a journey unique

12/21/2015

Do we really need to travel long term and take a gap year to have wonderful memories? Little things do happen and they are sometimes the best ones.

To take a gap year and travel for months to amazing places around the world is getting very popular among travelers. What about the small, beautiful things happening when we travel. Those little aspects, that we sometimes overview but that are actually making the difference and our trips just unique?

To travel is to learn more about yourself, but also that small acts and experiences can make the difference… here are some that came immediately up to mind. It’s an open list of course that can get richer and richer in personal experiences!

1. TO GIVE WITHOUT EXPECTING ANYTHING IN RETURN

It can happen on an ordinary road, when, after asking passersby for directions you are not only showed the right way, but you are actually walked to your final destination.

Persone

How about hostel guest kitchen? Have you ever been offered some food prepared by other fellow travelers, just for the pure pleasure of sharing something with others?

2. TO FEEL FREE

That feeling that wraps you during a plane take off, or on our departure day, when you realize it’s finally time to leave, and THAT day has finally arrived.

Who cares whether it’s for 3 days or for 3 months
, to feel free from everyday worries and problems, it’s so good that should be enjoyed slowly.

3. A STARRY SKY

Starry sky

Well, it depends on where you actually are, but if you are traveling to scenic natural destinations with no city lights, well, you can’t miss out the deep black sky scattered with small bright dots, probably never visible from your window at home.

4. TO DISCOVER OFF BEATEN SPOTS RECOMMENDED BY THE LOCALS

At first, you wouldn’t really want to believe it, you didn’t even like the name of that place suggested by a total stranger randomly met in a bar but you decided to give it a try and eventually it turned out to be the highlight of your trip!

5. WANDER AROUND FOR HOURS LOOKING FOR A PLACE AND STUMBLE UPON IT RANDOMLY

You’ve almost lost all your hopes, you’ve been wandering for hours with a map and a guide book and still, that place you’ve heard about so much and that you really wanted to see, is nowhere to be found. While you’ve almost given up, there it is, coming up around the corner. You know that feeling, don’t you?

6. TO BOOK A HOSTEL FOR THE FIRST TIME AND FEEL LIKE AT HOME

Hostel

You never really did it before, you were held back by stereotypes heard about hostels and you were not really into it but then, you happened to book your first bed ever in a hostel, get to meet many travelers, make friends, met your perfect travel mate and even fall in love… you feel like at home!

7. FALL IN LOVE WITH A PLACE AND EXTEND YOUR TRIP

Some of us, arrive at their destination, madly fall in love with it and realize that those 3 days, 2 weeks are not enough to give it justice and you know what, we end up extending our stay

8. BE ABLE TO PICK SOME WORDS IN THE LOCAL LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATE

Think about China or Brazil, how wonderful would it be to be able to explain yourself in the local language even just for basic needs? After days and days of tries, you start mumbling a few words and adding verbs and more words to the sentence and little by little you make yourself understand

Have any similar small things become the best part of your journey?
