Which are the most expensive cities in the world?

03/12/2014

Here is the list of the world's top 'high-cost' destinations. At least you don't need to worry for your accommodation there, as you can sleep in hostels at budget prices.

Every year the EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) makes a list of the most expensive cities in the world and we always find it interesting to see which are the destinations our pockets fear.

This time on top of the list there's the city-state of Singapore, which gets its position thanks to its very expensive public transport (average prices are so high they are three times more expensive than those in New York City, which is not a lowcost destination itself...). Even shopping in Singapore does not seem to be cheap either, despite there's such a wide range of shops where to go wild with purchases.

Singapore

Tokyo, which was the top one expensive city in 2013, is now in a lousy 6th position, whereas the winners' spots are of three European cities: in a second position it's Paris, followed by Oslo (3rd position) and Zurich (4th place).

The EIU also places Sydney among the most expensivce cities in the world, including therefore Australia in the 5th position of the list.

Now that we've found out which the most expensive cities in the world are, let's have a look at some examples of hostels you can book in these cities. Thanks to HostelsClub's great deals, even the most costly destinations can become affordable.

Let's start from Singapore: it may even be the top high priced city in the world, but it does have a wide range of lowcost hostels to choose! There's City Backpackers, Fernloft Hostel and Betel Box, which are all great properties where you can sleep from €10 per bed per night.

Singapore from €10.50

Paris is also famous for having exhorbitant prices, however no huge budget is required to sleep with a Eiffel Tower view. Hostels like Friends Hostel, Blue Planet or Peace & Love cost between €16-20 per bed per night... and ça va sans dire, Paris is definitely worth it!

Paris from €16

Let's go to Norway now: whoever has been to its capital, Oslo, will be well aware that deals seem not to exist here and they will definitely agree that it is a well deserved position, that of a 3rd place.
Hostels are more expensive if compared to the European average, however properties such as Anker Hostel, Anker Apartment or Sentrum Pensjonat offer quality accommodation from €24-30 per night.

Oslo from €24

What this article aims at saying is that one wonderful city's high cost of living can't put you off: just try to be wise while planning your trip and you'll see that no destination is out-of-reach. For example travel by car and share the costs with other people (whether friends or fellow travellers), keep an eye on lowcost plane tickets, stay in hostels, in particular in hostels with a shared kitchen, so you can save on your accommodation as well as on your meals. Nothing else is needed to experience the holiday of your dreams, no-one will ever be able to steal your travel spirit from you!
