04/05/2016

The Estonian capital is a true travel gem - but many people do not know why. This article explains just why you ought to visit it.

Today, we are focusing on the Baltic republics, especially Estonia. This is a destination that is not the most common one for backpackers. However, in the last few years it has been enjoying increasing success as it is a delightful place to live in, and the city offers many things to see and do.

We have made a list of the 5 things you absolutely have to see when visiting Tallinn. You'll see that between culture, nature and good food the reasons for a trip to the Estonian capital are truly overflowing!

1. GITA A KADRIORG

Palace

On the outskirts of Tallinn (easily reached by tram , you will find the elegant Kadriorg Palace and its beautiful surrounding parkland. Cultural and artistic exhibitions are held in the central building, while the well kept park is a favoured location of locals in search of a relaxing stroll. In 2011 a delightful Japanese garden was installed in its interior, created by the genius of Masao Sone.

2. THE TELEVISION TOWER

Tv Tower

If the day is clear do not think twice before visiting the television tower . The structure is very similar to the Alexanderplatz " Spargel " in Berlin and it has an elevator that reaches 170 metres high in just a few minutes . If there is no mist you'll enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Estonian capital which will show you just how green this city is! The view can also enable you to see all the way to Helsinki. For the little ones, there are parts of the city to spot in an interactive game, while the brave can test their skills by walking on the outer ledge of the structure (no tightrope walking here: you will be connected with a safety rope, but avoid if you suffer from vertigo! ).

3. PIRITA BEACH

Beach

If you think of Tallinn you probably you do not immediately think of the sea, but this beautiful city also has a coastal area accessible by bus within a few minutes from the centre. Do not miss the Pirita beach: in summer it is frequented by locals keen for a dip (be careful, though, not everyone can immerse themselves in the baltic sea ... even in summer the water is cold! ) , In winter , the beach provides a stunning setting for a stroll with the sea ice on one hand and the skyline of Tallinn on the other: unmatched tranquility!

4. THE KGB MUSEUM

Museum

If you've seen the film " The Life of Others" and liked it, do not miss this small but interesting museum. On the 23rd floor of the Hotel Viru, a small exhibition has been set up that takes visitors back to Soviet times and reveals some interesting history about the KGB and the way "high levels" frowned on the Baltic Republics and feared their push towards independence. Take advantage of the guided tours (in English ) that enrich a visit with many interesting anecdotes.

5. DELICIOUS CUISINE

CIBO

If you love nouvelle cuisine then Estonia is not for you. If you value good wholesome food that tastes like old rural traditions here you will find delectable bread (dark rye bread of course!), whilst salted herring, salmon and pork are key players in the typical dishes here. Do not miss the excellent soups (supp ) and rossolye ( salad made with beets and pickled herring ).

Obviously there are many more than 5 things to do in Tallinn: There is a wonderful old town of medieval origin, well-preserved city walls, rich Orthodox churches, and many museums and parks where you can take a moment to relax ... but we will let you discover these things for yourself! :) And if you want to make a trip to Estonia we have good news for you, you have plenty of choice between hostels and small B & Bs with really low prices. Seeing is believing...
