#4 Julius Dein: 'magic is an international language'

10/18/2018

The Sixth Power is the new weekly column dedicated to emerging or already established influencers. Each week there will be a new interview with an influencer, this week we have spoken to Julius Dein.

From today, Hostelsclub's blog hosts a new column dedicated to influencers, entitled 'The Sixth Power'. We are going to hear what they have to say, listen to their stories and discover their way of life. Many people would love to be like them, and influencers are one of the latest and most coveted professions. Their following, in some cases, exceeds the influence of the Heads of State. The Californian Kourtney Kardashian with 67.3 million followers has more followers than the number of votes that led Donald Trump to the post of President of the United States of America in 2016. The Italian Chiara Ferragni, before amassing 15 million followers on Instagram and worldwide fame, was just a beautiful blonde girl. They're millionaires, but what exactly do they do? We'll find out, giving a voice to travel bloggers in particular. It is certain that their ability to influence is such that international brands rely on them by showering them with gold. Ten years ago, brands turned to televisions and newspapers, columns of modern media power. Now they rely on Influencers. Television was called the fifth power, but are influencers the sixth power? From this question, the title of this column was born. There will be many good tips for those with attentive ears. On the other hand, it seems that it doesn't take much to become an influencer: a social profile, a little work and lots of imagination.

#4 Julius Dein: magic is an international language

The protagonist of this fourth episode of The Sixth Power is Julius Dein. All we can say is that he's a decisively different person from those we've interviewed before. With an incredible mix of talent, charisma and irony he certainly doesn't go unnoticed. His recipe for success is simple: make his tricks fun, viral and universal, leaving his victims open-mouthed as he rakes in the likes on Instagram and Facebook. It can seem easy, but behind each post is a whole lot of work. The magic is that his hard work has paid off: at the time of writing, he has over 4,700,000 fans on Instagram and 16 million on facebook as he travels all around the world to show them his tricks. Ladies and Gentlemen, we present, Julius Dein.

It has been said that influencers are those who have ideas because only an idea can be influential. What are the ideas that you try to portray through your profile? Tell us!

The idea I’m trying to portray is that magic is an international language and can be used to break people out of their normal reality and bring them into a special world for a brief moment where their mind is blown :) I also like to represent the idea that you shouldn’t take life too seriously and have fun on the journey :)

How do you decide what aspects of yourself, of your experiences and of your trips to show to your followers? Do you tell your followers everything about yourself?

Lifestyle - public, personal life - private. I keep a lot to myself but love to show my audience the journey, the culture and the magical moments! That being said, there is lots that the audience don’t see!

Where do you get your inspiration for your content and tricks?

As a kid I loved magic :) so that inspired me to become a magician. As a 14 year old I watched youtube prank videos and magicians online. I thought it was so cool so when I got older it was a natural progression for me to try and fuse the two passions together.

How did you find out about the professional use of social media and what pushed you to invest your time in them and to pursue a career through them? What convinced you to put yourself out there? How often do you get to travel?

I had a few viral videos and built a small following. Some brands approached me to work with them on branded content and that made me realise there was actually a business in this. I also realised as I got more exposure internationally, more people would contact me to perform at their events (worldwide!). I’ve always been quite assertive but what really convinced me to put myself out there was seeing other social media creators built audiences and carve their own path. This made me realise this career was actually a tangible path and not just a vision.

Do you enjoy being in the public eye? Do you think this will be your profession forever? How do you imagine your professional future?

Yes, love it! Love meeting all the new people. Love travelling and performing magic. Love the business of it too! It’s all so exciting. Love the spontaneity of it - I often don’t know where I will be next week/month! As for future, I don’t know but I’m sure my brand will evolve. My passion for magic will stay with me forever I think.

Julius Dein increasing popularity

We're always promoting how great hostels are, but can you tell us what your favourite thing about hostels, and the hostel culture?

I love hostels because of the friendly unsnobby vibe, communal culture and I get to meet people from all walks of life. A quick walk to the communal area/lobby and I make a whole world of new friends! This is awesome for me because when travelling - that’s such a huge part of the experience! :)
