You want to enjoy yourself in Stockholm, but your wallet doesn't like that at all? Don't worry, we'll show you 10 ways how to have fun without paying a penny!
1. DISCOVER THE OLD TOWN WALLS OF STOCKHOLM
Stroll through the medieval streets of Stockholm and stop by Medeltidsmuseet. The entry is free and you can see the last remaining parts of the old city wall.
2. CINEMA IN THE PARK
How about a movie in the park? In August you will have the possibility to watch movies for free in the beautiful Rålambhovsparken. Make sure you arrive early in order to get the best seats and grab some popcorn.
3. LEARN MORE ABOUT SWEDISH TRADITIONS
In Nordiska Musem you can find out everything about the life of the Swedish. We recommend the area devoted to the Swedish way of setting the table. There you're going to find out about how the attitude of the Swedes has changed over the years. Admission is free on Tuesdays from 1pm-5pm.
4. DISCOVER THE UNIQUE BUILDINGS AROUND HAGAPARK
You'll be astonished by how many different types of buildings you can find around Hagapark. The Echo Temple for example - a particularly beautiful structure, which was used by Gustav III as a dining room. On the picture above you can see the copper tents - they look as if they came straight out of a fairytale, right? Make sure you don't miss out on the angelic Chinese Pavilion! If this isn't your thing you can also find a butterfly house and a park museum in Hagapark (of course with free admission).
5. FREE STAND-UP COMEDY
In Södermalm you can enjoy free stand-up comedy every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8pm. The performances are in Swedish or English.
6. LEARN A BIT OF SWEDISH AT A SPRÅKCAFÉ
Språkcafé means language café and is completely free. It usually takes place in bookshops, libraries and cafés. There you get the chance to meet the locals and practise their language.
7. PANORAMIC VIEW ON STOCKHOLM
Monteliusvagen offers one of the best views of the city. On the way there you will pass by some traditional Swedish houses. You can also combine this activity with a walk in the district of Södermalm. A little hint for all the fans of Stieg Larsson: The locks between the old town and Södermalm were part of the film adaptation of the famous Swedish thriller "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" starring Daniel Craig.
8. WALK ACROSS THE VÄSTERBRON BRIDGE
This bridge connects the districts Södermalm and Kungsholmen. It used to be known as a suicide bridge, but that changed a few years ago when passersby started hanging up love locks.
9. OBSERVE THE PARADE OF SOLDIERS AND THE CHANGING OF THE GUARDS AT THE ROYAL CASTLE
The ceremony at the Royal Palace of Stockholm takes about 40 minutes. It starts on weekdays at 12:15pm in the courtyard and on Sundays at 1:15pm. We recommend going there on special occasions such as the birthday of the King (April 30th) and the name day of the Crown Princess (March 12th). On these days you will get to see special performances.
10. WALK THROUGH THE MEDIEVAL STREETS OF THE OLD TOWN
The old town (Gamla Stan) is the perfect base for exploration. During the day you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the main streets Västerlånggatan and Stora Nygatan and walk through the Mårten Trotzigs Gränd - the narrowest street in Stockholm. We can assure you, no matter where you go - every alley is going to take your breath away and will make you want to discover more!
