What to see in Macedonia?

Macedonia is one of the countries that used to be part of Yugoslavia. Now, Macedonia is an independent country and second to Montenegro, the smallest country of ex-Yugoslavia. Even with its small area, Macedonia has a lot of things to see. The two most visited cities are Skopje (the capital city) and Ohrid.

Skopje is the capital city of the country, which at the moment is having lots of work done to give Skopje a cooler, brighter image. For instance the shopping boulevard has been re-constructed and also there is a big shopping mall where you can go shopping by the hippest stores. It is nice to stroll over the Čaršija (Turkish Bazaar) and to cross the Kamen Most (stone bridge) which is still standing after the heavy earthquake in 1963. The bridge crosses the important Vardar River which separates the city in two halves - the Islamic part of the city from the Orthodox part. Visit the Sveti Pas church which was built underground because, by law, during the times of the Ottomans, churches were not allowed to be taller than Mosques.

If you want a more relaxed day, take a nice walk along de Vardar River and drink a glass of wine on the terrace next to the football stadium (FK Vardar Skopje). An absolute must see in this city is the house of Mother Teresa. And finally take a taxi to the Sveti Pantelejmon monastery for an amazing view over Skopje.

In the evening all the youngsters of Skopje go out to mingle and you can have a nice dinner in one of the many restaurants or have a drink at the bar. Order a Shopska (salad) and a Pivo (beer) so you can fit in with the locals. You will also find that Skopje has a pretty good night life too, where you can dance till the early morning in any of their many clubs.

Book a hostel in Skopje today!

From Skopje you take the bus to Ohrid, the second most visited city with the famous Lake of Ohrid. The bus journey is already like an excursion as you pass through all the mountains with green trees and colorful flowers. The lake of Ohrid is surrounded by small towns who keep the lake clear and clean. Alongside the harbor you can easily find a fisherman who will be happy to give you a tour around the lake by boat, but just be aware that you are allowed to negotiate the price of these excursions, so don’t be afraid to haggle a bit.

Finally, finish the afternoon with a refreshing dip in the lake or sunbathe at one of the bars with comfortable sun beds. You’ll feel like a diva when you lay along the lake with a gorgeous view, lovely temperature and all the comforts. During the evening you can have a lovely dinner in one of the many restaurants, whether you can choose from a good piece of meat, fish or a traditional Macedonian recipe. If you are lucky a group of musicians will come and play Macedonian music next to your table. A stroll along the lake by night is a must, get a taste of the true Macedonian culture with families taking their evening walk and the smells from the kiosks of roasted chestnuts, a typical Macedonian delicacy. And don't forget to take a trip to the church of Johannes de Doper, as Ohrid is built on a slope, so while it’s quite a climb, it’s absolutely worth the view.

Those are just a few ideas of things to do in Ohrid, so now you can book a hostel in Ohrid and start your Macedonian vacation today!
