Would You Pay to Spend a Night in Jail?

02/15/2010

Without committing a crime, it’s still possible to end up in jail – just for the fun of it.

If you don't suffer from claustrophobia or solitude, and still have a playful mind, you should book a bed in one of the prisons online with Hostelclub.com! The idea sounds a bit bizarre, but in many parts of the world the idea of turning the abandoned local prison to a youth hostel has been realized and become a great success among travelers who prefer accommodation with a bit of a personality. So if it’s Ok for you to sleep behind bars, on windows and doors, Hostelsclub has the place for you. You’ll find one of them in Biella, ostello di Biella, outside of Milan in the northern part of Italy. It opened in July 2008 after a complete renovation after being shut down since the 80’s. This old prison is right in the center of Biella, on the beautiful street, Corso del Piazza, and offers single, double, and quad rooms.

In Ljubljana in Slovenia we find the delightful Hostel Celica, one of the most fashionable hostels in the world according to several travel magazines. The reason behind the huge success is that they gave artists the liberty to design each room after their own taste. The result is a fantastic and creative environment, with 20 cells, each unique painted. On the first floor, there is an art gallery hosting many different exhibitions. The management of the hostel often organizes workshops, poetry readings, and every Wednesday they have a concert at the hostel, followed by a Jam session with musicians from all over the world. Hostel Celica offers optimal service, with a bar, a restaurant, Internet café, a public kitchen, laundry and much more.

And next there is Sweden. In the northwestern part of Sweden in the region called Dalarna, known for it’s nature, deep forests, fishing lakes and wild life. The capitol of Dalarna, Falun, known for it’s copper mines, also houses the Falu Prison Hostel. This is a good base for excursions in the region, though you’ll also find plenty to discover inside the prison, where you’ll find a small museum and a tour that tells fascinating stories about the prisoners who stayed there when the prison was in use between 1850 and 1995.

Also in Sweden, but this time in Stockholm, you´ll find the immensely popular hostel, Långholmen Youth Hostel situated on a green island in the middle of the city, just by the beach. In Stockholm the water is clean enough to take a swim even! From the hostel you’re close to the subway that can take you to Stockholm's downtown area in just five minutes, or walk 10 minutes and you’ll find yourself in Södermalm, the neighborhood known for independent designer boutiques, cafés and bars. The hostel was renovated in 2008. The rooms are made of old cells (often combined from two smaller cells) and have either 2 or 4 beds. The prison has not been in use since the 70’s, and just before it was closed it was the setting of one of Sweden’s most popular comedies “Release the prisoners –It’s spring!”.
