Glencolmcille is a Gaeltacht area and the Gaelic language is still in common use here. Oideas Gael, The Ulster Cultural Centre, was established in the area in 1984 to promote the language and Irish culture. Today, it is world renowned and plays host to visitors from all over the world who come to learn Irish at all levels, as well as attending other courses run by the centre during the summer months including Archaeology, Painting, Folklore, traditional dancing, fiddle school etc.
The area is a mecca for traditional Irish music - Ceol sa Ghleann gives traditional fiddle lessons throughout the year as well as a week long fiddle/music school twice a year (details available on their site). Oideas Gael runs several weekend courses on flute, bodhran, and tin whistle.
Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí hold a week's fiddle school is held during the first week in August every year (known as Fiddlers' Week locally). The pubs in Glencolmcille are alive with traditional Irish music!
Other attractions in the area include Father McDyer's Folk Village Folk Village. Established in 1967, it features thatched cottages which represent three hundred years of rural village life and also a museum.
Enjoy a round of golf at the Glencolmcille Hotel and Golf Club, or experience river fishing.
The Activity Centre, Arasgcc, based in Malinmore offers facilities for diving which include include drying room, wet entrance and meeting/training room with audiovisual facilities. Arasgcc also have a compressor on-site and can provide air fills for diving groups.
Failte Ireland has designated two walks in the area as part of the national walks network, known as the Glencolmcille Loop - the Drum Loop and the Tower Loop. The 35 km stretch of coastline between Slieve League and Slieve Tooey offers the walker a rich diversity of spectacular scenery. For the experienced walker, the challenging trek across Slieve League, whose summit is reached by crossing “One Man's Pass,”provides breath taking views. At 1,972 feet, these are the highest sea cliffs in Europe and they have to be seen to be believed.
The Glen Loop walk takes you up to Martello Watch Tower and you can continue along the cliffs to the deserted village of Port. Situated beside a stony beach, its isolation is emphasized by the crashing of the sea against the cries of the sea gulls. Behind Port, lies the deserted fishing village at Glenlough.
