Venice Carnival takes place from the 31st of January to 17th of February 2015
Every year Venice hosts the annual Carnival, this year from the 31st of January to the 17th of Feburary, during which people have fun by fancy dressing, attend the masks Parade in Saint Marks' Square and Riva degli Schiavoni, enjoy music and collateral events and of course wolf down tasty frittelle!
Venice's Carnival peculiarity are not just papier mache masks, which are considered by now the city's symbol, but mostly this centuries-old tradition, which has survived till today!
"Carnevale di Venezia" events take place all over Venice: in the popular Saint Marks' Square, in the city's alleys and in campi, in schoolyards and office and in Venice's bakeries: Carnival is infact the only "official" moment of the year during which Frittelle (fritoe veneziane) can be found. Frittelle consist of fried egg-base pastry filled with several delicious different fillings: chantilly creme, chocolate, whipped cream and zabaglione. The most traditional type of frittella is "venexiana" which actually comes with no filling and the pastry mix includes pinenuts, dried raisings, candied fruit and it is then sprinkled with icing sugar. Today there are more "commercial" and modern types of fillings: Nutella, white chocolate and apple however each bakery has its own secret recipe which make their frittelle unique and different than in the other bakery. Pasticceria Tonolo (Calle de San Pantalon, 30123)
Located between Piazzale Roma and Campo Santa Margherita, this bakery and pastry shop is one of the best ones in town and one of Venetians' favourite coffee places. Pastries are € 1 each, frittelle 1.30 and it is said that Tonolo's ones with chantilly creme are the best ones!
Pasticceria Rizzardini (S. Polo1415 Campiello dei Meloni)
The atmosphere at Rizzardini's is pleasant, coffee and cappuccino are excellent as are any of their cakes, from croissants, cream cakes to frittelle "Venexiane" which literally melt down in your mouth! Simply try everything - you can then head to Campo San Polo and burn the extra calories while ice skating in the San Polo Arena.
Pasticceria Bucintoro(S. Polo 2229)
The inviting smell of fried frittelle can be detected as far as 100 metres from the Caffe Bucintoro entrance. Highly sugggested for sit down breakfast, Bucintoro's owner, Gino will welcome you with a smile and serve you with freshly made coffee and frittelle. Caffe Bucintoro is a Venetian oasis not to be missed.
Pasticceria Majer (Santa Croce, 287A)
Established in 1924, Caffe Majer has flag shops all over Venice. They serve delicious coffee, freshly baked rolls and croissants, pizzette and sandwiches. Caffe Mayer 's brand logo is a pink globe and their moto goes like: "Se vuoi goderti la vita, prendi un caffè Majer - if you want to enjoy life, drink Majer coffee!
Pasticceria Rosa Salva (Calle Fiubera, San Marco 950)
Pasticceria Rosa Salva is such a Venice's popular bakery that it even got a mention by Donna Leon, the book author behind the adventures of Police Commissioner Brunetti. It's in fact a historic bakery, establlished in 1870; the experience of six generations results in incredibly delicious and unique cakes and pastries!
