There’s nothing quite like an on the road from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia where nature is still king.
Our road trip in Patagonia starts from Buenos Aires, and we suggest you to stay here for at least three days before beginning your long and awesome adventure.
This will be our itinerary:
3 DAYS IN BUENOS AIRES
Here in Buenos Aires it’s time to experience and settle down to the Argentinean climate, we’re not just talking about the weather, but also the friendly people. Enjoy visiting this vibrant city and how about seeing six things to see that we have recommended? After exploring, relax in one of the hostels in Buenos Aires which are clean, modern and offer great value for money accommodation.
FROM BUENOS AIRES TO BAHIA BLANCA
Let's start with our Patagonia on the road, gettin to our first stop is Bahia Blanca. We start with a beautiful journey of about seven hours which will take us to Bahia Blanca, a great city to chill out and recharge the batteries. Next we continue to the first important World Heritage Site, Valdes Peninsula on the coast of the Atlantic.
FROM BLANCA TO PIERTO MADRYN
To reach Perto Madryn, you have to drive another 6-7 hours. You can relax yourself at El Gualicho Hostel before exploring the Valdes Peninsula. At this magnificent coastline you’ll be lucky enough to see different species of animals, especially marine mammals like whales, sea lions and fur seals. There are also around 180 species of birds such as flamingoes, hawks and great egrets.
FROM PUERTO MADRYN TO COMODORO RIVADAVIA
We think the city of Comodoro Rivadavia makes for a good stop over, however if you want to rest before reaching El Calafate, no problem. The road from Puerto Madryn to Comodoro Rivadavia is long which is why we recommend a stop in the middle. You will feel less tired, refreshed and ready for the next part of the journey. Alternatively another option would be to travel to Puerto San Julian (a nine hour trip from Puerto Madryn). This shortens the road to El Calafate.
ON THE WAY TO EL CALAFATE
Onward to El Calafate, a town near the Southern Patagonian Ice Field in Santa Cruz. Located on the shores of Lake Argentino, El Calafate is famous for being very close to the Los Glaciares National Park, a photographer’s dream. Have your camera or Smartphone ready to take photographs of the spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier which is great for sightseeing and hiking. After dropping your luggage at your hostels in El Calafate, it’s time to organise the rest of the trip.
VISITING PERITO MORENO
It’s only a one and a quarter hour drive from El Calafate to the amazing Perito Moreno glacier. This stunning glacier covers around 250 square metres. One of the most important tourist attractions in Patagonia, this beautiful glacier is a must-see.
Now it’s onto the last stage of the journey, Ushuaia, known as “the end of the world”.
FROM EL CALAFATE TO USHUAIA
To reach Ushuaia there’s around ten hours of travel. At the height of Bahia Azul-Punta Delgada you’ll need to take the ferry to cross over and reach Tierra del Fuego. Enjoy the beauties of Tierra del Fuego, an archipelago divided between Argentina and Chile. Its dramatic landscape offers snow covered mountains, tundra and glaciers, sheer bliss.
