Seeing the city by tram is definitely a wonderful experience - especially if that tram is a vintage one.
Half of the joy of a tram ride is the romance of it. You get to take a glimpse into the past, and this awakens in us the longing for a trip through time and space. Anyone can see the city on foot or by bicycle, but what about through the window of a historic tram?
There are many cities around the world with tram systems. However, here we want to focus only on those that have historic trams, that are city attractions in and of themselves.
PRAGUE
In Prague there is tram number 91, also known as nostalgic line No. 91, which comes from Vozovna Stresovice to the centre of the city, carrying passengers travelling back in time. The red tram glides between the rails, directed by electric wires above it, revealing a city filled with unusual and different things to do.
This tram is only active on weekends and public holidays.
THE LISBON
The star of the most famous shots in Lisbon is the bright yellow tram 28, which climbs the narrow streets of the historic district of Alfama. Its route takes around 40 minutes, traffic permitting.
Want to see Lisbon from a unique point of view? This is definitely the right way!
RIO DE JANEIRO
The historic tram of Rio de Janeiro is called the Santa Teresa Tram, because it connects the centre of the city with the neighbourhood of Santa Teresa . The tram is open on the sides, like the tram in San Francisco, so be careful when you climb aboard. Cling on tightly, as those cobblestones on the streets are no joking matter!
SAN FRANCISCO
The line to take in San Francisco is the F line, which runs through the city streets with its vintage wagons that originate not only from different parts of the United States but also from Italy.[/p]
The wagons are of different colours, so do not expect this tram to be only yellow!
ISTANBUL
The historic tram in Istanbul runs its red carriages around the whole Istiklal Caddesi. This is the T5 line, though there is another tram line too: the T3.
The tram runs from 7 am to 20 pm.
WARSAW
A ride on a 1950s tram through the streets of Warsaw enables you to discover a city that has so much to offer, even if you only visit for a weekend.
MELBOURNE
The Melbourne City Circle line is really unique, and it has become something of a real symbol of the city. But on the other hand Melbourne is the Australian city that most recalls European cities! So, it could not omit an historic tram line!
