An Italian’s blog about Australia

How your hobby can turn into a success

Giordano is a self-appointed blogger and writer who would like to work in Digital Media, marketing and communication.

He has been living in Australia since 2011, where he would like to succeed; he also writes about his experiences in his blog www.giordanodallabernardina.com. He spent two and a half years in Sydney, then moved to Perth in 2013. Born and raised in Verona, than an “expat” in Padua for the university, he left his job, the happy hour and the small streets behind, sold everything else and moved DownUnder. HostelsClub interviewed him to find out more about the life of an Italian blogger in Australia with the aim of inspiring other people.

How did you start your blog?

In the beginning it was just a way to sum up the new things I discovered every day, my new experiences and all the new things around me. It was also a way to keep track of my successes and failures – kind of a diary, actually.

Since the beginning, I chose a very personal writing style, to have something different from all the other blogs out there. I wanted to be different from the masses, so I decided to write as spontaneously and directly as possible, using (and maybe abusing of) a very explicit language and indelicate expressions. The result is a way of writing (and reading) that is fast, seamless, direct, aiming at entertaining, but also at describing the places I visit and my experiences.

Step by step, almost unexpectedly, the blog grew and got more success than I ever thought: I got some very important partnerships. It has even helped me have two internships in the Social Media field, one with Sydney’s Red Cross.

For all this, I am deeply satisfied with the work I have done, and I am still doing with passion.

The best thing, however, are the many fans that follow my adventures, their feedback and support, through the comments and messages I receive every day.

Which post was your most successful?

I do not think it was a specific post, rather a kind of posts. The trilogy about working in Sydney was very successful. The ones generating more discussions are the ones about Italy and Italians.

How did your life change since you opened your blog?

In some ways, it got busier. At the beginning, as I said, it was almost a hobby for me, then the readership grew, and I felt a reciprocal obligation towards my audience. I write for those who read me: me first, then the public, we all stop for a few moments to read those lines.

The blog exist thanks to the person who writes and the people who read so, in a way, I feel very like I owe my audience. In a very positive way, of course!

Thanks to the blog, I also knew people that I would have never met otherwise, and I even got some jobs thanks to it.

The blog also gave me the idea to write an ebook, which is basically an extension of the blog itself: it is about what to do BEFORE leaving, tackling a lot of themes that you’ll find very useful in planning your trip.

I would say that the blog is now part of me, and I like to think that it could only grow, going forward.

What do you wish for the future, both for you and your blog?

For me I would like the job I have been looking for for so long…

For my blog I’d like a partnership in Perth. Maybe a tourism board, or a website that promotes the city. It is not much, is it?

Is there anyone you would like to thank?

I would like to thank Roberta for all her support, maily the graphics of my blog, which we just redesigned. I also thank Karla for the English translations.

Finally, I thank my readers, those that comment and those that just read. My blog would not exist without you.

And to all, have a nice trip, wherever you are going!
