Visit Amsterdam and discover the 10 best coffee shops in town

Amsterdam is a marvellous city, rich in art and culture and with a magic and unique atmosphere thanks to the several canals and the typical Dutch style houses mirrored on the water. We can't argue that coffee shops are also one of the main attractions Amsterdam boasts of; it's quite common to associate the city with coffee shops and since the offer is quite wide we've decided to put together a list of Amsterdam's 10 most popular coffee shops; whether you are pro-cannabis or not, we think it is anyway worth paying a visit, just to have an idea of what this is all about for locals and non-residents.

This article is obviously not an open invitation to smoke but we think it could be interesting to understand that coffee shops in The Netherlands can be considered as entertainment venues where to have fun, often decorated with funky interior design, ethnic or psychedelic decorations or the very popular reggae theme. Soft drugs in The Netherlands are not legal but tolerated if used "moderately" and within the fixed limits (up to 5 grams per customer). Underage customers are not allowed in coffee shops which also do not sell alcohol but only soft drinks and snacks.

Here is our list of Amsterdam's 10 best coffee shops:

Old Amsterdam Coffeeshop (Amstelstraat 35)

This coffee shop has become more and more popular and busy, that's why the main room could sometimes be very crowded (that's not the best if you are looking for some privacy). At the same time, the service is friendly and only quality products are sold. The atmosphere is pleasant and laid back and many customers choose this coffee shop even only for a coffee at the counter.

Green House Coffeeshop (Oudezijds Voorburgwal 191)

It's a small shop very much loved by Amsterdam residents too who do not mind meeting there with friends after work. It's is very popular for the high standard of the cannabis sold which has made them win 38 times the "High Times Cannabis Cup".

Green House Coffeeshop

Abraxas (Jonge Roelensteeg 12)

It's a coffee shop with a welcoming atmosphere and with extra care for details of the interiors furnished with oriental pieces and a mystic touch. The name itself has medieval roots but this coffee shop is definitely up to date when it comes to the range of high-quality cannabis available.

Kadinsky (Zoutsteeg 14)

Located close to Rosmarijnsteeg, this coffee shop truly is a local attraction, especially thanks to the friendly staff and the informal and laid back atmosphere. The menu won't' disappoint with such a wide choice of marijuana.

Smoke Palace (Linnaeusstraat 83HS)

It's the ideal environment to relax and enjoy the easy-going style of this coffee shop (once known as "Coffeeshop New York"). It is located close to Oosterpark, Amsterdam's eastern quarter. With the good weather, you can smoke on the outdoor terrace, at the lowest prices in town.

Smoke Palace

Dampkring (Handboogstraat 29)

This spacious candlelight coffee shop features a warm Spanish style environment. Operating since 1993, it has a wide selection of cannabis and it is open until 1 am.

Green House Coffeeshop

Amnesia (Herengracht 133)

This is not among the cheapest shops in town but you know it provides quality product and you can be on the safe here. Sit back on the couches and relax: to leave behind your worries is priceless (the venue name is not a random choice...)

Baba (Warmoesstraat 64)

Middle Eastern deco style, full of ad-hoc statues of divinities, traditional costumes and ancient weapons. What will impress you the most in this coffee shop are actually not the decorations but the friendly atmosphere, which is excellent if you want to party and socialize with tourists and locals alike.

Siberië (Brouwersgracht 11)

This is a historic coffee shop with something like 28 years of experience in the industry. The main lounge is often crowded (even though it really fits many customers, roughly 30 people) and the music background reggae anhip-hopop will get you for sure on the dance floor.

Barney's (Haarlemmerstraat 102)

A lively and modern coffee shop with LCD display to advice customers about the different types of Marijuana available. Staff is professional and knowledgeable and will guide you in the search of the right Product for you.

This was the last coffee shop of your top 10. If you are planning to challenge yourself in an Amsterdam tour to experience coffee shops do not forget to find accommodation where to rest after your night out. Thankfully on Hostelsclub, you can find a wide selection of hostels in Amsterdam with such budget rates and if you don't believe us..... see for yourself.
