Secret Rome: 4 curious facts about the Eternal City you don't (but should) know

Did you really think to have seen Rome all? Well, here are some curious fact instead that you might not know yet.

How many times have you already been to Rome? Whether only once, million times or never, you might, of course, be tempted to visit it or go back, Rome is so rich in things to do and places to see, that there is always something new to discover and learn. If you are under the impression you’ve seen it all during that one visit, you might be wrong. This applies almost to any cities, for examples, do you know any quirky things to see in Madrid? Or in Milan?

Today we will travel through such curious facts about Rome to make you feel like going back for a visit!

1. TROPICAL PLANTS IN THE COLOSSEUM

You probably did not notice it last time you visited the Colosseum, but, origins of the name aside, still wrapped in the mystery, more than 350 different species of plants have been growing spontaneously, some are even tropical species.

2. MUSEUM "ANIME DEL PURGATORIO"

This is a one of a kind museum Rome can be very proud of since it is dedicated to the souls of the Purgatory, acknowledging, therefore, their existence. One of the relics preserved in the museum consists of e burnt handprint on a book page.

The museum is located in the Parish of Sacro Cuore di Gesù in Prati.

3. THE MAGICAL PORTAL

Once owned by the Marquis Massimiliano Palombara dei Principi Rosacroce, this portal is located near today’s Termini Station area.

The Magical Portal The Magical Portal still stands there, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, and dates back roughly to 1680. The Marquis was so passionate about esotericism that he got a laboratory built for himself and for other friends and colleagues sharing his same passion. According to the legend, one of his guests discovered how to turn lead into gold and left the chemical formula written on some note sheet in the Marquis Massimiliano Palombara’s laboratory. Being written as a secret coding, the Marquis decided to carve the mysterious notes on the portal so that maybe, one day, any random passersby could have decoded them. As we speak, the carved inscription has yet to be decoded.

4. THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF COPPEDE'

This neighborhood is located within a short walk to the historic city center and, despite not being largely known by tourists, it’s very peculiars and could not but be included in our list of curious facts about Rome. Here visitors can find many example of Art Liberty and Art Decò buildings, with Greek and Baroque influences.
