On Holiday in Greece

We have all heard of Greece - the country with many legends and myths, good food like delicious Tzaziki, and the infamous ouzo drink on endless islands. But what are the best places to visit when choosing from the thousand of islands?

The capital of Greece is Athens being the political, cultural and economical center of the country. Athens is named after the Godess, Pallas Athene. The Akropolis is world famous among tourists.

Another city in Greece that is worth the visit is the city Patras. The city is famous for the spectacular carneval that is popular among the gay population of Greece. From Patras you can easily access Italy and the Ionic islands by boat.

Thessaloniki also called Saloniki (just to add to the confusion) is in the north of Greece. From here you can easily go to Macedonia and Istanbul. In the spring, the blossoming nature is just splendid. If you are planning a visit to Thessaloniki, then be sure to climb the Athos mountain. In the evening you won't be bored as there are many bars, clubs and restaurants. You can also go to the lakes: Volvi and Koronia.

The biggest city in the region Thessalie is Larissa, in the summer months there are a lot of festivals and theater plays.

Greece has a total of 1700 islands, which covers 20% of the whole of Greece. The 4 biggest islands are Crete, Rhodos, Lesbos and Euboea.

Crete is popular among tourists. Chersonisos is famous among the young people because of the many bars and clubs that are open til early morning. Go to star beach, where you can drink cocktails, listen to music and hang poolside. Other famous cities on Crete are Malia, Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion.

The next largest island after Crete, is Euboea. This island is not yet famous among international tourists but in the summer months it is visited by Greeks themselves. The island is close to the city Chalkida where the island is connected to the mainland by bridge. There are a lot of charming vineyards on the island.

Lesbos is described as the pearl of the Egeische sea. Lesbos is famous for is gorgeous flora and fauna. The island has a lot of nature and beautiful landscape.

The mountains on the island of Rhodos have a lot of trees and in the middle of the island you find large green valleys. The island has a busy nightlife with more than 100 bars.

Other popular islands on Greece are Kos, Corfu and Samos. Kos is the closest island to the Turkish coast, where you can easily take a boat for a day and head to Turkey. Kos is a green island where you still find a lot of wild nature, and beautiful beaches. Kos is a famous vacation island because it has something to offer for all.

Corfu is the island in the northern part of Greece with a part of the island just opposite of the Albanian coast. It is only 2 kilometers away from Albania. There are a lot of olive trees on the island. The island is very green, because it rains a lot, while the coastline is rocky and there are stony beaches. Corfu is most famous for its snorkeling.

Samos is the island with beaches and fisherman villages. The city has a cozy boulevard. You can make excursions to the night valleys, the temple of Hera and take a boat to Kusadasi (Turkey).
