Vienna hot spots

If you like Austria, you like Sissi, also visit exhibition 'Sissi in the Movies'. Vienna Furniture Museum devotes a special exhibition to the furniture used in the legendary “Sissi” movies with Romy Schneider. After all, the abundant furniture stored at the Imperial Furniture Collection served as imperial backdrop for these popular movie classics. The “Sissi” movies formed the movie landscape of the 1950s as deeply as the image of Empress Elisabeth (correctly spelled Sisi) who became a cult figure. Now these movie hits are 50 years old – a good reason for the Imperial Furniture Collection . Vienna Furniture Museum to mount a permanent exhibition with an insight behind the scenes of the movie production. Film excerpts, props, photos, and posters along a Sisi Path through the museum confront the movie “Sissi” with her historical model, Sisi. You will found Vienna Furniture Museum in Vienna, Andreasgasse 7.

Only a short hour’s drive from Vienna, with best connection to the highway from Vienna to Budapest and in sight of the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, you will find a fascinating baroque adventure world: the Palace Hof Imperial Festival. The Hof Castle had also been known as the site of splendid events since its construction in 1726. Today, this tradition of opulent festivities is continued: the palace offers a wonderful ensemble of baroque attractions. The extensive baroque gardens with detailed landscaping on seven terraces are still as magnificent as they were in the prince’s time: artistically laid out flower beds, romantic pergolas and richly adorned fountains which can serve as a quiet refuge for restful hours or as a magnificent backdrop for feudal festivities. Mediterranean plants from back then and now can be admired in the revitalized orangerie.

Events in Vienna

Vienna offers evenings of great entertainment, hot rhythms and exciting beats. Don't forget to visit Wiener Staatsoper. Great voices, important performers, exciting productions – Vienna’s opera houses and operetta stages offer stimulating entertainment. You can enjoy La Traviata with Anna Netrebko and Josheph Calleja, Madama Butterfly with Hui He and Marian Talaba, Eugen Onegin with Tamar Iveri and Simon Keenlyside. If getting hold of opera tickets has eluded you, paying a visit to “La Divina” bar is some consolation. Here you can sip your drinks in a recreated Vienna State Opera box, while viewing a film version of the current opera showing on a gold-encased wide screen. Every evening you can enjoy the respective opera, ballet or jazz performance, while on Thursdays young talent delivers live music. La Divina was founded as an homage to Maria Callas. In addition to classical music and live transmissions from the Vienna State Opera, it offers a very special location for classical music lovers. Small exquisite snacks for in-between meals are served.

Jazz in Vienna

Vienna is more than waltzes, opera and classical music. Rock and pop stars from all over the world perform here in front of exciting backdrops – from Schönbrunn Palace to the so-called Gasometer. And jazz aficionados may want to visit Porgy & Bess and Jazzland. Porgy & Bess is a jazz and music club with a varied program. In addition to the club program with concerts of Austrian and international musicians, the club also focuses on unusual and interesting music. Jazzland is the oldest of the jazz clubs still existing in Vienna. Axel Melhardt has made it his goal to present music from all directions. Visuals are as much a part of a visit to a club as the right sound. The sound: frame Festival at Vienna’s Künstlerhaus puts them in the center of attention. Rock and Pop concerts regularely take place at the Wiener Stadthalle- during 2009 top acts are expected: Tina Turner, Pink, Beyoncé, Simply Red, AC/DC, Lenny Kravits...

Nightlife in Vienna

Dancing and “chilling” of the highest quality – after all, Vienna’s electronic music scene is world-renowned. And clubs such as Flex at the Danube Canal were selected as one of the best locations worldwide. The program there varies as much as it does at other party locations in the city. The Gürtel ring road is fast becoming the nerve center of Vienna’s nightlife. If you like live musik zou have to go B 72, on ne of the 'in' places on the Gürtel, underneath the elevated subway. What sets it apart? It stretches over two floors. So there is a good view from the gallery to the stage, whether a live band is performing (from indie guitar bands to Hip Hop) or a DJ is running the show. To recommend are Homepage, Chelsea and Felix. There are a lot of Clubs and Discos: try Club Massiv, a small cellar in Vienna’s Erdberg district, has seen it all. DJs from numerous countries man the turntables and turn Club Massiv, with Techno, House, and Drum 'n' Bass, into a required location for those who want to visit nightspots off the beaten track. An In-Place in a Back Courtyard: Elektro Gönner; an inventively adapted electrician’s shop in Mariahilfer Strasse has developed into a very popular meeting place with DJs and art events. Sometimes the most obvious names are the best. Elektro Gönner is called that because it has always been called that and the new owner simply took over the place – including the name. Somehow, the ambiance is such that it feels as if the venue has been there in its present form for years. If you enjoy nightlife, visit Loop, Roxy, Why not or U4 Clubs.

Coffee and cookies

Apart from its traditional plush coffeehouses and the tiny espresso bars, Vienna also has spacious café-restaurants, café-confectioners, and combinations of coffeehouse and Scene bistro, bookshop, bar, music club, cabaret theatre, etc. More recently, an attempt has even been made to instil the fast-food culture into the café. Nevertheless, at the core of the coffeehouse is still an oasis in people’s daily lives, a place to retreat to, meet others, enjoy yourself and take time out. The Viennese coffeehouse is old - and yet it displays youth and vitality.
