The city Saint Petersburg in Russia is after Moscow the most famous and important place in Russia. Because the architecture of the 18th and 19th century, Saint Petersburg is a famous holiday destination. Besides checking out the architecture in Saint Petersburg, there is an amazing nightlife, many museums and an interesting history. Saint Petersburg is also the home town of the former president of Russia.

But Saint Petersburg is mostly famous for it's “ white nights”, which you can see once a year. This is the only city in the world were you can see bright nights during the month June/ July.

White nights, in Russian (Beliye Nochi) means: that during the whole night it will continue to stay light. This special happening is caused by the very northern geographical position of Saint Petersburg. As Saint Petersburg is the world most northern city in the world. Because the city lays so high comparing to the latitude, it is impossible for the sun to go under the horizon which causes the sky not to go dark. Advantage is that the Russians don't need to pay for street lights during these months.

The “white nights” take place during the months June and July, from the 20th of June the “white night festival“ begins, a month long parties and festivals are held. The “white night festival” started in 1993, with every night ballet performances and shows in the Marijnskitheater. Also during the festival all the bridges in Sain Petersburg will be open all the time.
