Is it safe to travel to Greece?
Athens is a beautiful place to travel this season, without the heatwaves and crowds of tourists, you can visit the Akropolis in peace and have a Sovlaki dinner at a taverna overlooking the colorful street life. However some doubts may be raised by those who have followed the news recently regarding the strikes and occasional riots....
To gain a more clear picture of the real situation, HostelsClub.com has talked to Sarah, one of the staff members of hostel Athenstyle and she confirms that the situation is not disturbing for tourists visiting Athens. These protests and strikes have been happening for years now, she says, and the Athenians are very well versed in being able to deal with the effects. Currently the economic spotlight is on Greece and it seems that the media are portraying it to be some kind of war zone. Which of course it isn't.
The protests are concentrated at Syntagma Square directly opposite the parliament building and when protests are on, the area is blocked off by police, unless you intentionally are looking for trouble, you won’t notice what is going on really. Some even say, the days that strikes happen look more like festive weekends, with parks, restaurants and bars full of family and friends! But don't worry. In the unfortunate event of a strike when you´re travelling to and from the airport in Athens, you´ll easily find a taxi, or a shared taxi –for a cheaper price, these are organised when there is a bigger demand for taxi's because of the strike. Or private cars can be arranged for a small fee. Greek people are hospitable and very helpful. The General view is that Greece may be in serious trouble. At the moment one of the only things that IS working well in Greece -is the tourism industry! So YES it is safe to travel to Greece.
It´s a wonderful country with a big heart, lots of fun, food and culture, they deserve all support we can give them! Athenstyle , warmly welcomes you to their hometown!
