Localizado en un paisaje casi cósmico – enormes rocas, envolviendo la valle de un rio pintoresco a 23 kilómetros al sudoeste de la ciudad de Rousse. Como si esforzarse a estar más cerca de su Dios, entre los siglos tercero y decimoséptimo los monjes establecieron aqui su Monasterio, cavando células, iglesias y capillas en las rocas. Las paredes de las salas más grandes, a menudo 6 a 10 metros de alto y sus túneles y galerías de interconexión, fueron cubiertas con cuadros que representaban a escenas bíblicas. Los artistas talentosos las pintaron con los frescos muy reales, exquisitos en color y la composición, y les convertieron en un unico ejemplo de la pintura medieval búlgara.
