La ciudad del puerto de Balchik está situada a 31 kilómetros al norte de Varna. Fue fundada en el siglo de V A.C.. El nombre de la ciudad viene de la palabra del Griego antiguo para “Manantial” debido a las aguas carvern osas curativas numerosas que sueltan en el área. La ciudad es famosa por el jardín botánico más grande y más rico en los Balcanes y el palacio de la reina rumana Maria (1924). El complejo del palacio consiste en un palacio central con una torre alta, muchos edificios en un estilo típico de ese tiempo, un parque con las terrazas, los carriles y las trayectorias, los alcoves de piedra con las columnas maravillosas y vista al mar .
