Veliko Turnovo - una de las ciudades búlgaras más pintorescas, preservando mas bien la atmósfera del último siglo está parada en las gradas sobre el río de Yantra que serpentea por las elevaciones de Turnovo y de las tres otras colinas - Tsarevets, Trapezitsa y Sveta Gora. Los edificios, perchando uno sobre el otro, rocas , precipicios y el río de Yantra abajo, estando muy cerca de uno a otro a lo largo de las calles estrechas . La parte antigua de la ciudad se ha declarado una reserva arquitectónica e histórica. Sabido bajo el nombre de Tsarevgrad Turnov (es decir ciudad de los Reyes ) y de Turnovgrad. En la ciudad y sus cercanías se han destapado rastros de vida que fecha al último Palaeolithic, neolítico, a Chalcolithic, al bronce y a las edades de hierro. Su significación esta creciendo durante los años de la regla byzantine (9no-1ò centuries). Despues de la fundación del segundo reino búlgaro (1186), la ciudad se convierte en su capital y centro de la Casa de la Moneda búlgara medieval. Durante l os siglos 13 y 14 en la ciudad y sus cercanías se fundaron numerosas escuelas literarias - centros de la actividad educativa y literaria. En 1393 la ciudad fue conquistada y quemada por los turcos . Durante los años de la regla otoman a es una fortaleza de l espiritu nacional y uno de los centros de la lucha para la liberación. En 1879 la asamblea nacional constitutiva tiene su primera sesión aquí y adopta la constitución de Turnovo - la primera constitución del estado búlgaro liberado en 1878.

Place of interest: The Old Town Hall (Konaka) Built in 1874-1876 by Kolyo Ficheto for a Turkish public building, but the design and space layout bears the signs of the Bulgarian National Revival secular architecture. In 1879 the Constituent National Assembly of newly liberated Bulgaria, which adopts the Constitution of Turnovo, has its first session in this building. A museum.

Tsarevets A historical hill of 12 hectares in the eastern part of Veliko Turnovo. In the 7th-14th centuries the capital residences of the tsar, the boyars and the patriarch are erected. Built over a Thracian settlement and Byzantine fortress, dating back to the 4th-6th centuries, Tsarevets turns into an unapproachable fortress and capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. When the Turks conquered Turnovo, Tsarevets was burned down.

Trapezitsa A hill in Veliko Turnovo. In the 12th-14th centuries Trapezitsa and Tsarevets comprise the Inner Town of the Bulgarian capital. The hill is plateau-like with steep slopes. Fortified with a fortress wall, which follows the rock wreath. The foundations of 17 churches have been preserved. On some of their inner walls one can see fragments of paintings. In the end of the 14th C. and the beginning of the 15th C., the Ottoman invaders burn down Trapezitsa.
